Huskies advance to Sweet 16
SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Quincy Pondexter scored 18 points,
Isaiah Thomas added 15 and 11th-seeded Washington extended its
incredible late-season roll all the way to the NCAA tournament's
regional semifinals with an 82-64 second-round victory over New
Mexico on Saturday.
Matthew Bryan-Amaning had 15 points and nine rebounds for the
Huskies (26-9), who have won nine straight, including the Pac-10
tournament and wins over two higher-seeded opponents in the East
Regional at the Shark Tank.
Washington ran right past the third-seeded Lobos (30-5), who
simply couldn't keep up with the breakneck offensive pace in their
second loss in three games.
After a rocky season that seemed headed nowhere in late January,
the Huskies are the epitome of a talented team peaking at
tournament time. Washington began the season in the national
rankings, but slumped badly before this stellar surge.

Johnson and Triche lead Syracuse over Zags, 87-65
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - Wes Johnson scored a career-high 31 points
and pulled down 14 rebounds and Andy Rautins added 24 points as
Syracuse hit a dozen 3-pointers to stun Gonzaga 87-65 on Sunday in
the second round of the NCAA tournament.
Syracuse's storybook season - the Orange were unranked before
the season and made it to No. 1 for the final week before losing to
Georgetown in the Big East tournament - continues on Thursday. The
Orange (30-4), the top seed in the West Regional, will play
fifth-seeded Butler (30-4) in Salt Lake City.
Gonzaga (27-7) was trying to become the second team from the
West Coast Conference to shock the Big East - WCC tournament champ
St. Mary's stunned second-seeded Villanova on Saturday - but they
were no match for the Orange.
Syracuse made the round of 16 for the second straight year.
Elias Harris led Gonzaga with 24 points.

Hernandez sharp in M's win
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Felix Hernandez tossed five scoreless
innings, Franklin Guiterrez and Ryan Langerhans each hit their
first home runs of the spring and the Seattle Mariners snapped a
seven-game winless streak with a 4-0 win over the Arizona
Diamondbacks on Saturday.
Corey Patterson added his second homer of the spring for
Seattle, which had only six home runs in the first 16 games before
hitting three on Saturday.
A day after losing starter Cliff Lee (abdominal strain) for at
least a week and Doug Fister (bruised right forearm) for a few
days, Hernandez was dominant, allowing singles to Tony Abreu in the
second and Stephen Drew to start the third.
Arizona's Dan Haren struck out seven over five innings and
allowed just four hits, but the home runs cost him.

Gael Force Win: Samhan's 32 lifts No. 10 Saint Mary's past
Villanova 75-68
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Omar Samhan was an unstoppable Gael force and
played the game of his career, finishing with 32 points and seven
rebounds to lead 10th-seeded Saint Mary's past Villanova 75-68 on
Saturday and improbably into the NCAA tournament's round of 16.
Mickey McConnell stopped and fired an arching 25-footer that
banked high off the glass for a 68-65 lead with 1:15 left.
Samhan used a two-handed block to turn back Reggie Redding and
McConnell made both ends of a 1-and-1 to make it 70-65.
The soldout crowd was well behind the Gaels (28-5).
The Wildcats (25-8) made an early exit a year after they played
in the Final Four. They started 20-1 and collapsed at the end.
Saint Mary's is off the Houston to play in the South Regional's

Adaora Elonu and Sydney Colson both added 13 points for the
Aggies, who kept rolling after knocking off Texas, Nebraska and
Oklahoma to win the Big 12 tournament title.
The 15th-seeded Vikings, making their first tournament
appearance, led 28-27 late in the first half. That was the wake up
call Aggies coach Gary Blair needed. Texas A&M (26-7) closed the
