Pangos, Sacre lift No. 24 Gonzaga over Pepperdine  

 

Malibu,  CA  (Sports Network) -  Kevin Pangos and  Robert Sacre each scored 15

points,  lifting  the 24th-ranked Gonzaga  Bulldogs over the Pepperdine Waves,

72-60. Guy  Landry Edi added  13 points for the Bulldogs (18-4, 8-2 WCC),
who bounced back from an 83-73 loss at BYU on Thursday night.

UCLA beats Washington State 63-60

Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Joshua Smith came off the bench to score 19
points to help lead the UCLA Bruins to a 63-60 win over the Washington State
Cougars in Pac-12 Conference action at Beasley Coliseum.
 
The Cougars (12-11, 4-7) were paced by Brock Motum who delivered a double-
double consisting of 25 points and 11 rebounds, but still WSU fell for the
third time in four games. Reggie Moore pitched in 12 points, Abe Lodwick 11
and Mike Ladd 10 points, which means the rest of the team accounted for just
two points on the afternoon.
 
Washington State played strong in the first half, not only hitting on 45.5
percent from the floor and 11-of-12 at the free-throw line, but also limiting
the visitors to just 11 total field goals, yet that still afforded the Cougars
just a five-point advantage at the break, 34-29.
 
In the second half it was WSU that struggled from the field (10-of-31).
allowing the Bruins to rebound and gain control of the meeting before holding
on in the waning moments for the three-point final.
 
In a game that saw four ties and 15 lead changes, WSU hurt itself with 15
turnovers, that UCLA traded in for 18 points.

Washington routs USC 69-41

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Tony Wroten scored 13 points, handed out eight
assists and pulled in six rebounds to lead Washington to a 69-41 rout of USC
in a Pac-12 matchup at Alaska Airlines Arena. Terrence Ross had 10 points and 14 rebounds as well for Washington (16-7,9-2 Pac-12) which has now won five straight.
 
Washington led 29-19 at the break by playing stifling defense as the Huskies
limited USC to just 30.0 percent shooting in the opening period. Washington
shot 40.0 percent itself.
 
In the second half Washington continued its strong defensive effort to stretch
out its lead by holding the Trojans to just 27.6 percent shooting. The Huskies
heated up to 57.1 percent from the floor to close out the game.
 
Washington dominated on the inside outrebounding USC 52-23 and outscoring the
Trojans 42-26 on points in the paint.

Viking Men hold on to win it over St Martin

Forward Rory Blanche had a team-high 21 points, leading nationally ranked Western Washington University to a 70-67 victory over Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Saturday at Marcus Pavilion on the SMU campus. The Vikings, ranked No.16 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll, improved to 20-3 overall and remain atop the GNAC at 11-1 with their seven consecutive victory.

Viking Women shut out St Martin

Forward Kristin Schramm scored a game-high 22 points as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's University, 83-50, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus. The Vikings, who won their third straight game, improved to 15-5 overall and remained in second place in the GNAC at 9-3.

Raymond lifts Canucks over Avs in SO  
 
Denver,  CO (Sports  Network) -  Mason  Raymond scored  the lone  goal in  the
shootout,  as  the Vancouver  Canucks rallied to  beat the Colorado Avalanche,
3-2, at Pepsi Center. The  Avalanche were in  position snap their skid, staring at an empty
net with a  lead in  hand, but Vancouver defenseman  Kevin Bieksa made a diving stop on
T.J. Galiardi's bid to cement the win. The  last  time Vancouver surrendered a  goal to the
Avalanche was last March. The Canucks won 3-0 on November 23 in Denver and 6-0
at home on December 6.

Huskies Do Well On Signing Day

(Seattle, WA) -- Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the UW football program secured a robust crop of 25 commitments on national Signing Day. Highly-touted quarterback Cyler Miles and four-star safety Shaquille Thompson highlight a class that finished above expectations. In a surprise move, Oaks Christian wide receiver Jordan Payton went with UCLA one day after committing to the Huskies on national television. Rivals.com rates the Huskies haul 20th nationally and fifth-best in the Pac-12. They entered the week ranked in the 40's.

Leach Likes Inaugural WSU Class

(Pullman, WA) -- New WSU head coach Mike Leach is happy with his first recruiting class. After just two months on the recruiting trail, the Cougs secured 27 national letters of intent. The crop includes eight projected offensive linemen and five receivers. The receivers corps includes the only consensus four-star recruit in the class, Venice High receiver Gabriel Marks, and South Gate's Robert Lewis, an all-purpose athlete with the nickname, "the Human Joystick." Rivals.com rates the Cougars class at the bottom of the Pac-12.

Mariners sign Guillen

Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners signed infielder Carlos
Guillen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training
Wednesday. The 14-year veteran spent the first six seasons of his career with the
Mariners before being traded to Detroit, where he has played since. Last season,
Guillen hit .232 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 28 games for the Tigers.

The 36-year-old is a three-time All-Star. He is a career .285 hitter with a .355 on-base
percentage, 266 doubles, 124 homers, 660 runs batted in and 510 walks through
1,305 games with Seattle and Detroit.

Seattle's NHL Prospects Improving

(Seattle, WA) -- The Phoenix Coyotes have long been rumored to be leaving the Valley of the Sun. A recent report in the "Winnipeg Free Press" has the Emerald City moving to the top of the list of cities for the erstwhile Coyotes. That sentiment was echoed by ESPN.com NHL writer Scott Burnside yesterday on the Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle. Burnside recalled a conversation in which NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said a lot of people think Seattle would be a great place for a team. The lack of a viable arena is a major sticking point, but it's believed Key Arena would work as a temporary home while a new arena is built.

Aden sidelined for remainder of season

Pullman,  WA (Sports  Network) -  Faisal Aden,  Washington State  University's
second-leading  scorer, will  miss  the remainder  of  the college  basketball
season with a left ACL tear. Aden, a senior guard, suffered the injury on
January 28th at Arizona.
 
The  Pac-12's Player  of the  Week for  the week  ending January  22nd, Aden's
14.5  points  per game  average ranked  ninth in the  conference, and his 89.4
percent from the free throw line was tops in the league.
