Viking Men hold on to win it over St Martin
Forward Rory Blanche had a team-high 21 points, leading nationally ranked Western Washington University to a 70-67 victory over Saint Martin's University in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference men's basketball contest Saturday at Marcus Pavilion on the SMU campus. The Vikings, ranked No.16 in this week's National Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 Poll, improved to 20-3 overall and remain atop the GNAC at 11-1 with their seven consecutive victory.
Viking Women shut out St Martin
Forward Kristin Schramm scored a game-high 22 points as Western Washington University defeated Saint Martin's University, 83-50, in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference women's basketball contest Saturday at Sam Carver Gymnasium on the WWU campus. The Vikings, who won their third straight game, improved to 15-5 overall and remained in second place in the GNAC at 9-3.

Raymond lifts Canucks over Avs in SO
Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Mason Raymond scored the lone goal in the
shootout, as the Vancouver Canucks rallied to beat the Colorado Avalanche,
3-2, at Pepsi Center. The Avalanche were in position snap their skid, staring at an empty
net with a lead in hand, but Vancouver defenseman Kevin Bieksa made a diving stop on
T.J. Galiardi's bid to cement the win. The last time Vancouver surrendered a goal to the
Avalanche was last March. The Canucks won 3-0 on November 23 in Denver and 6-0
at home on December 6.

Huskies Do Well On Signing Day
(Seattle, WA) -- Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the UW football program secured a robust crop of 25 commitments on national Signing Day. Highly-touted quarterback Cyler Miles and four-star safety Shaquille Thompson highlight a class that finished above expectations. In a surprise move, Oaks Christian wide receiver Jordan Payton went with UCLA one day after committing to the Huskies on national television. Rivals.com rates the Huskies haul 20th nationally and fifth-best in the Pac-12. They entered the week ranked in the 40's.

Leach Likes Inaugural WSU Class
(Pullman, WA) -- New WSU head coach Mike Leach is happy with his first recruiting class. After just two months on the recruiting trail, the Cougs secured 27 national letters of intent. The crop includes eight projected offensive linemen and five receivers. The receivers corps includes the only consensus four-star recruit in the class, Venice High receiver Gabriel Marks, and South Gate's Robert Lewis, an all-purpose athlete with the nickname, "the Human Joystick." Rivals.com rates the Cougars class at the bottom of the Pac-12.

Mariners sign Guillen
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - The Seattle Mariners signed infielder Carlos
Guillen to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training
Wednesday. The 14-year veteran spent the first six seasons of his career with the
Mariners before being traded to Detroit, where he has played since. Last season,
Guillen hit .232 with three home runs and 13 RBI in 28 games for the Tigers.
The 36-year-old is a three-time All-Star. He is a career .285 hitter with a .355 on-base
percentage, 266 doubles, 124 homers, 660 runs batted in and 510 walks through
1,305 games with Seattle and Detroit.

Seattle's NHL Prospects Improving
(Seattle, WA) -- The Phoenix Coyotes have long been rumored to be leaving the Valley of the Sun. A recent report in the "Winnipeg Free Press" has the Emerald City moving to the top of the list of cities for the erstwhile Coyotes. That sentiment was echoed by ESPN.com NHL writer Scott Burnside yesterday on the Kevin Calabro Show on 710 ESPN Seattle. Burnside recalled a conversation in which NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said a lot of people think Seattle would be a great place for a team. The lack of a viable arena is a major sticking point, but it's believed Key Arena would work as a temporary home while a new arena is built.

Aden sidelined for remainder of season
Pullman, WA (Sports Network) - Faisal Aden, Washington State University's
second-leading scorer, will miss the remainder of the college basketball
season with a left ACL tear. Aden, a senior guard, suffered the injury on
January 28th at Arizona.
The Pac-12's Player of the Week for the week ending January 22nd, Aden's
14.5 points per game average ranked ninth in the conference, and his 89.4
percent from the free throw line was tops in the league.
