Making The Grade

Olympia, Wash.  (Metro)  -- A bill that would give local public schools A through F letter grades is waiting for a vote in the State House after narrowly clearing the Senate.

State Senator Kevin Ranker wanted to replace the letter grades with a more detailed evaluation.

While debating the bill on the Senate floor, the Democrat from Orcas Island described an alternative school in the 40th district that he says needs more than a single letter to explain its struggles.

Ranker says the bill needs more detail on why a school struggles to meet standards.

He says the reason for a school’s success or failure cannot be addressed with a letter grade.

Supporters say the bill would give parents more information and provide incentive for schools to improve.
