Whatcom County, Wash. -- The state agency that currently manages timberland around Lake Whatcom is not likely to convert the land into a state-run recreation site.
Whatcom County Council member Ken Mann says the idea came up as the county moves forward with plans to re-convey the 7,800 acres of timberland into a county-run park.
Mann says a manager with Department of Natural Resources told the council this week that the idea of a state-run rec site was a long shot.
DNR manages logging on the land, but lawmakers are in the final stages of requesting that the department switch the land back to the county’s control.
The council will hold a public hearing on the re-conveyance and possibly vote to approve the plan on March 12.
