Officer Mark Young with Bellingham Police says some tax forms contain personal information such as social security numbers and birthdates, which thieves can use to steal identities.
He says do not leave your confidential outgoing mail in an unlocked mailbox and do not leave your mail in a blue collection box if it is full or if it will sit there over the weekend.
Pick up your incoming mail as soon as it gets delivered and don't leave sensitive documents unattended in your vehicle or office.
Young says if you see anyone suspicious messing with the mail, call 9-1-1.
