Bellingham, WA (KGMI) -- Students and volunteers from a Western Washington University Community Outreach Program were honored for their work in the Emerald City this week.
A group of mentors were recognized by Western President Bruce Shepard, Speaker of the State House of Representatives Frank Chopp, and Low Income Housing Institute Executive Director Sharon Lee for their work throughout the City of Seattle.
Western Washington University Communications and Marketing Director Paul Cocke says that the program, sponsored by Western’s Woodring College of Education and Continuing Education, is intended to give people a step-up when it comes to building confidence and gaining employment skills.

The program which began last Fall, matches master's degree students and volunteers with people for one on one job skills mentoring.
Cocke says the majority of the adult matches are refugees from East African Countries.
